President Trump has repeatedly referenced a new scandal in the last week: Obamagate. But what exactly is Obamagate? Obamagate refers to recent revelations that reveal former President Obama worked with his allies in the final days of his administration to bring down Michael Flynn, President Trump’s incoming National Security Advisor. Former President Obama worked with his administration, including presumptive Democrat nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden, to attempt to bring down the incoming President during his transition period. Obama did this by utilizing both invalid FISA warrants to spy on President Trump both prior and after his election, as well as unmasking the identity of the incoming National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, for political reasons.
The implications of Obamagate are immense. Let’s begin with the spying. A lot of the information regarding Obama’s spying is still classified, but according to Attorney General William Barr, “spying did occur”. President Trump’s former aide, Carter Paige, was spied on due to supposed ties to Russia. The problem with said spying is that two out of the four FISA warrants issued as the basis for the spying were invalid, according to the Department of Justice. Countless other examples of Obama misusing the FBI to spy on Trump campaign members have occurred.
Obama led the calls to investigate Flynn, despite there being no legitimate reason. On January 5, 2017, Obama met with his National Security team after the FBI began to close their case against Michael Flynn. Remember, Flynn had his calls intercepted “routinely” by the FBI while monitoring Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak. Due to the calls being intercepted routinely, Flynn’s identity was supposed to remain anonymous or “masked”. Flynn’s identity would have remained “masked” had it not been for Obama and Joe Biden, who led the calls to “unmask” him.
At the January 5 meeting, Obama announced that he “had learned of the information about Flynn” and his communications with Kislyak. Obama was reportedly briefed on the communication by the now MSNBC contributor John Brennan. Sally Yates, the Deputy Attorney General at the time, wasn’t even aware of said communications in the meeting. Lastly, in leaked FBI notes, officials have made clear that their intent was to “get him (Flynn) fired” or “get him (Flynn) to lie”. Obama and his officials attempted to harm their predecessor, Trump, by targeting his incoming National Security Advisor with the intent to make political gains.
In short, Obamagate is a large scandal with even larger implications. Obama spied on President Trump and his team while also setting up his team and ensuring that President Trump’s administration began with the Michael Flynn scandal. It is important to note that Flynn was used by many Democrats as well as the media as evidence of President Trump’s supposed tiwa to Russia. As more information comes out, it is essential that the American people hold the Obama administration accountable.
